is there any way to raise the reception of a rc car?

i'm doing a race with the size of a pinewood derby car and the rc car can't receive the controls for the distance needed.

1. A directional antenna, or more powerful transmitter, might help. It may also be possible that a different length of receiver (car) antenna would work better. http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=133047 says get a qualified technician, and fresh transmitter batteries.
